Quake-scarred second city: downtown cafes, grill yards, one rooftop

Mandalay's list is deliberately short. The magnitude 7.7 earthquake of 28 March 2025 killed thousands here and destroyed around 50,000 buildings, and reconstruction was still visibly unfinished a year later, so guidebooks, reviews and listings written before that date are no longer proof that a place is still standing. Every venue below was re-checked in September 2026 against the business's own recent posts, and anything that could not be confirmed was left out rather than guessed at. Two further cautions: the UK advises against all but essential travel to Mandalay Region, and the Mandalay Palace compound is an active military headquarters that came under rocket fire in January 2026, so the moat and palace are left off this page.
